We are proud to announce that St Martin’s is the overall winner of the National Gamezing Competition of 2011.

We have started the GameDev Challenge summer training programme since July 2010 and continued in June 2011. In 2010, 23 students who are doing the Diploma/Degree in Computing Information Systems and Creative Computing with us joined the competition. In 2011, we have more students and teams (about 7 student teams) joined the competition. They were supported by Neville Attard, Lecturer of St Martin’s, and team leader of the competition, Jonathan Barbara, the Head of Department in Computing Science and some Lecturers of St Martin’s: Thomas Cuschieri, Joseph Camilleri, Stephen Caruana, Keith Pace and Alan Darmanin. These tutors are being mentored by Dr. Gareth Lewis, ex-production manager of Lion head Studios, creators of AAA games such as Black & White and Fable.
After the success we have achieved in Gamezing Competition of 2010, St Martin’s student team Minja with their original game Pibbit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=share&hl=zh-CN&v=P5OIjgmDT5Y )won the First Prize of the National Gamezing Competition of 2011. The team is led by Leon Cassar, with team members Andrew Brincat, Mark Borg, Blair Avellino and Jonathan Aquilina.

St Martin’s student team Barbagann with their original game ScarFish (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqqmmStusRs&feature=share )won the Second Prize of the National Gamezing Competition of 2011. The team is led by Anthony Demanuele, supported by Robert Vella, Bernhardt Engerer, Ryan Sammut, Neville Cassar and Cliver Ciappara. The team Barbagann Gamese were also commended for their original digital art.
Congratulation to all St Martin’s students and teams!

St Martin’s is pleased to offer the opportunity to prospective interested parties to follow a course of study leading to the CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor )examination in June 2012, here in Malta.
The course will be delivered by Maltese professionals in the field. The duration of the course is of 5 months, spread over two sessions of two hours each, every Monday and Wednesday starting 1st February 2012 at 6pm at the premises in Hamrun.
Two players from Malta, Oliver Said and Alexander Pettersson, recently participated successfully in the Gatwick International Premier Chess Tournament held in London.Said, in particular, exceeded expectations and won the prize for Best Performance - a notable achievement.
At the beginning of the tournament he was seeded 51st out of the 57 participants. However he beat a number of players rated above him to finally occupy an excellent 16th place. In doing so he finished above players with international titles.
Said played all his games against opponents rated above him. So obtaining a 61% score against players who were all expected to beat him is a remarkable achievement. He won four of his nine games (including one against an opponent rated a massive 361 points more than him - on paper this means Said had less than 1% chance of winning that particular game), drew three and lost only two.
It is no surprise that this mathematics teacher from St Martins Institute easily had the best performance improvement when compared to his starting rating. Said expects to see his rating shoot up by 57 points a consequence of this tournament. Pettersson played against a number of players from different countries, includiing a Woman Internationl Master, and did enough to defend his current international rating.
As part of the ongoing commitment that St Martin’s has endeavored to deliver over the past two years, we are proud to present Mr Derek Wise, Studio Head and CTO at TRC Family Entertainment Limited, a company which is taking on the challenge of delivering exciting entertainment products for children and families for years to come.
Before joining TRC Family Entertainment Limited, Mr Wise had his own company that put “more than 55 online games on thousands of servers all over the world”, and thus has an extensive experience in Games Development recruitment. Worthy of note is also his participation with the team in charge of Eve Online.
During this seminar Mr Wise will be delivering a general speech about what TRC and other studios look for, and should be looking for, in terms of great fits for developers. This should be of great help in guiding you in your career towards game development or broaden your horizons in understanding the dynamics and the internal business structures of game companies.

Mr Charles Theuma, Principal of St Martin's Institute of IT was invited to speak in a colloquium at the Johann Bernoulli Institute, University of Groningen http://www.rug.nl/corporate/index. Mr Theuma was the personal guest of the Eminent Professor Nicolai Petkov and Professor Michael Biehl. The team of Professors and doctorate students specialize in Machine Vision and Learning.
Prof Nicolai Petkov (http://www.cs.rug.nl/~petkov) and Prof Michael Biehl published more than 100 scientific papers each. Most of their work is of high impact and this is confirmed by the high citations rates that they have; about 1500 citations for the work of Prof N. Petkov and also about 1500 citations for the work of Prof. M. Biehl."
When one considers that the average citations per paper in computer science is 3.6, such number of citations place these two Professors with the top scientists in the field. In fact Professor Nicolai Petkov is ranked in the top 1% of scientists in the Engineering discipline.
Mr Theuma delivered a speech to select members of staff and postgraduate students dealing with the development of a Teaching Institution in Malta, and the transition of Higher Education during this past decade.
Apart from the colloquium, Mr Theuma was able to meet with other academics and administrators on one to one meetings, with the specific intention of building a sound relationship between St Martin's Institute of IT and the Johann Bernoulli Institute of Computer Science and Mathematics.
This first round of meetings was initiated when Professor Petkov, Professor Biehl and Mr George Azzopardi(http://www.cs.rug.nl/~george) where invited to speak in a very well attended seminar on April 14th, named "Robot Intelligence: How do robots Learn and See?"
A bi-lateral agreement is being drafted which will enable the exchange of academics, students and joint development of programmes and research initiatives in artificial intelligent systems in medical, manufacturing and games development systems.
Mr Theuma was also given an extensive tour of the new building for the Johann Bernoulli Institute of Computer Science and Mathematics as well as other facilities and buildings in the main campus just outside the City of Groningen as well as the Academia which is located at the City Centre.
The Johann Bernoulli Institute is keen to follow upon the recruitment of Mr George Azzopardi as a student for his PhD with offering possibilities for scholarships at doctorate for St Martin's alumni. The Johann Bernouilli Institute will also consider students for MSc postgraduate studies.

The Hon Lawrence Gonzi, Prime Minister inaugurated the New Building of St Martin's Institute of IT as part of its 25th academic year celebrations since its inception in 1985. St Martin's is the pioneer in the development of an ICT profession in Malta, being the very first school to offer courses in ordinary and advanced level in computer science. In 1995, St Martin's also started offering students the opportunity to read for a Diploma in Computing and Information Systems and in the year 2000 a fully fledged BSc (Hons) in Computing and Information Systems conferred by the University of London.
During the inauguration the Prime Minister thanked St Martin’s Institute of IT for its contribution to not only to the development of Malta’s human resources but also to the development of the IT sector in Malta. Dr Gonzi added that the success of the ICT sector in Malta and our capacity to attract investment depends on our skilled human resources. The private sector is complementing the Government’s investments particularly through MCAST and the University thus contributing to Malta’s success.
In his speech Mr Charles Theuma highlighted the main milestones of the Institute since its inception, mainly highlighting that since 2004, St Martin's assisted in the graduation of 120 students out of which 58 achieved a first class honours classification. All St Martin's students sit for examinations set and marked by a panel of examiners in London, with exams organised by the Registrar of Examinations, Ministry of Education.
The St Martin's New Building is solely dedicated to the teaching of ICT and the only building offering unassisted accessibility to individuals in a wheelchair. Classrooms are equipped with the latest educational technology and Dr Gonzi had the opportunity to meet current students during their classes.
During the visit, the Prime Minister also met with the award winning teams that took part in the National XNA GameZing competition. St Martin’s Institute is also a pioneer in the teaching of creative computing and the design of computer games. Its students scooped up the two national awards in this competition and participants had the opportunity of showcasing their talents to the Prime Minister.
St Martin's Institute of IT is an Affiliate Centre of the University of London International Programme.

It's a sad day here at SMIIT today as "iz-ziju" Alex: a teacher, a UOL graduate, a mentor, a colleague, a friend: has sadly passed away after months fighting an illness, whose initial symptoms we shared with him as he experienced them on his line of duty: in the classroom.
A fighter since his early days as a radio engineer with the merchant navy, Alex Dimech as a teacher never gave up on a student and would seek to drive him/her to his/her full potential - he was indeed a favourite with many students and has their respect. He was a very humble person and, although he was older, always looked at his colleagues and superiors with respect.
One particular memory that will persist in my memory of Alex is that had manged to fuse his passion for computers with his earlier passion of model collectables as in his spare time he would be on ebay checking out for that elusive model to add to his splendid collection of old toys and models.
Thank you Alex for all the stories, knowledge, and experiences you have shared with us. Truly, rest in peace.
